When Two Become One — Merging Technology and Fitness

Technology and fitness may not initially seem like they go hand in hand, but since Wii Fit and video games such as Just Dance took off large-scale, more and more people are combining the two. Some are even matching up heart rate monitoring with cell phone technology, so you can always keep track of your heart rate while you’re out and about.

Products that monitor heart rate can be used to help maintain fitness levels (‘tis a lifestyle, after all!). If you keep an eye on your heart rate over long periods of time during different activities, you can learn how certain actions affect it and, ultimately, you can gain an insight into your general fitness level. The most up-to-date technology featured in heart rate monitors enables users to tag their heart rate levels with labels for future reference. Apps such as Instant Heart Rate are just one way to track with a watchful eye on how your heart is reacting to activities on a regular basis.

living healthySome cell phones feature Android OS which can download a host of fitness aids including heart rate monitoring apps. Samsung is known for providing the world with the Galaxy S5, the first cell phone to feature a built-in heart monitor rather than a downloadable version. Some of the other products from Samsung, such as the Gear smartwatches, boast the same built-in heart monitor technology. If you don’t one, however, fret not: many smartphones offer the capacity to download fitness monitoring apps easily.

The ability to use your cell phone as a heart rate monitor means that you no longer need to carry an additional device (great!). Many people consider convenience critical and because of this a lot companies make this a key consideration in the design and manufacture of their products. One way that they do this is by providing users with everything that they could possibly need in one device, including more than just the basics. Originally, cell phones  would be capable of just that — phoning people while on the move. Now they can be used as entertainment devices and even fitness aids (glorious!).

It may seem impossible that a cell phone can accurately monitor your heart rate, and the reality is that it relies on your phone camera technology to monitor your pulse. If you have a heart rate monitor installed on your cell you can record data whenever you wish. Perhaps you’ll then push harder through your workout or, if you’re maybe pushing too hard, stop and relax, since many apps will give you recommendations based upon your results.
