Hosting a Party | Men’s Edition

We can’t quite peg what has happened in society to put hosting a party, be that an intimate dinner party or a large celebration like a wedding, on women. Images of extensive Pinterest boards and long nights of crafting come to mind, along with pretty invitations and floral arrangements.

But it wasn’t always like that.

Both men and women can be excellent party hosts, especially when taking into consideration that hosting is more than just planning a party and its decor.

Here are 5 tips that can make you the guy who has amazing parties:

Stick to the Classics

While excessive glitter and colour can be fun for a carnival-themed party, it’s always safe to stick to the classics, putting quality above all current trends. This goes for stationary, décor, menu choices, and more. Think James Bond and you should know what to do.

Ask for Help

If you don’t want to spend your days and nights choosing flower arrangements and napkin colours, work with an event planner to make your dream come true. This can be useful for small events like dinner parties and birthdays, up to large soirees like weddings or retirement parties.

Be Deliberate with Your Guest List

Choose quality guests over quantity; a phrase you’ve probably heard before, but not in this context. The people you invite will strongly influence the mood of your event. Create a balance of dynamic and level-headed personalities that will allow for your guests to feel comfortable. No crazy exes or loose cannons. You want people to be thinking about the party at the end of the night, not an embarrassing fight or scene.

Be Present on the Day of the Party

We don’t just mean attend. You are the host, and it’s your job to make sure that everyone is comfortable and enjoying themselves. Introduce people you think would hit it off, refill those drinks, and make a point of welcoming all your guests, indicating your pleasure that they made the effort to come. While you might be tempted to “take care of things” behind the scenes, that’s not your role tonight.

Food & Drink is Important

Whether it’s cocktails and snacks, or a full dinner situation, the food has to be good. Your guests shouldn’t be walking around hungry or thirsty at any point. If you want to have a greater role in preparing, do as much as you can beforehand so that you can be present during the party. For a more hands-off approach, ask a friend or a caterer for help. Your event planner will likely have excellent suggestions for you.

Let’s show everyone that men can be equally good event hosts—it’s time to bring out the “host gifts” and hit the town.

  1. Plenty of food and plenty of alcohol and you really can’t go wrong. For my 30th I’m getting a mobile pizza oven to turn up….surely we can’t go wrong!
