It seems like movies get worse every year. The better technology gets, the more Hollywood wants to reboot older movies to give them a technological flare. Fans are fearing that originality in Hollywood is dying a slow death. Even with all of the disappointments, there are still many great movies out there. In fact, even in the midst of the disappointments that 2016 had to offer, it was overall a year of great films, with more still to come. Here are some of the best movies of 2016.
Deadpool
Deadpool was one of the most anticipated movies of 2016 and it didn’t disappoint. For those who don’t know anything about Deadpool, he was the black sheep of the Marvel comics. After a Special Forces operative was experimented on after he became a mercenary. The experiments left him with powers of accelerated healing, and he adopted an alter-ego named Deadpool.
While most of the superheroes from the comics are serious and heroic, Deadpool is more like the witty stepchild no one likes to have around. Ryan Reynolds should win an award for turning snark into an art form during the movie, really taking on the role as Deadpool and giving everyone a sense of who he really is.
The Witch
The Witch is an independent horror movie made by Robert Eggers. The movie won the Sundance Film Festival in 2015 with flying colors and the grand prize was a release in theaters all over the world. The movie focused on a New England family in the year 1630. When the newborn son of a Christian couple mysteriously disappears and their crops suddenly die, they all begin to turn on each other. Their fear of witchcraft leaves them vulnerable to the evil that lurks around them.
The Nice Guys
The Nice Guys is one of the many movies that The Gos was cast in recently. Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe play an odd pair of private investigators who are investigating a porn star’s suicide in the late 1970’s. This movie included everything that a movie needs to be successful. It had action, wit, violence, and intelligence. Nothing ruins a movie faster than a lack of chemistry between the two lead actors on the set. Gosling and Crowe couldn’t have made a better pair for this film. They seemed to have been lifelong friends. They worked so well together, it will be a joy if fans get to see them together again in the future.
Masterminds
Corky comedies are necessary because it offers people comic relief after living hectic lives. It seems like corky comedies aren’t the same anymore if they don’t include either Zach Galifianakis, Owen Wilson, or Jason Sudeikis. Luckily for comedy lovers everywhere, Masterminds has all three of them on screen. While Masterminds doesn’t release until the end of September, there have been pre-screenings around the United States. Many fans have offered the same feedback after seeing the movie.
People didn’t have high hopes for this one. They thought it would be washed out with a tired plot. However, people left the movie admitting that they were wrong and the movie was absolutely hilarious, which isn’t easy to find these days. The cast did an amazing job, including Kate McKinnon, who while only had small roles, managed to steal the spotlight every time she walked onto the set. If you loved Zombieland, which was also produced by Ryan Kavanaugh, you will love Masterminds.
Bad Moms
Bad Moms is a movie that mothers everywhere will appreciate. If you need a few laughs after spending your days scraping gum off the floor and scrubbing toilets, this should be your movie of choice. The movie includes some fan-favorite ladies in Hollywood include Mila Kunis, Kristin Bell, and Christina Applegate. Once a group of moms was pushed to their breaking point, they decide they need to get out and have some fun in their lives. This hilarious movie shows that you’re never too old or too much of a mom to get a little wild and crazy. These moms are true Unicorn Moms, which is something that many modern mothers strive to be- moms who love to have fun and don’t care what other people think while they’re doing it.
The Secret Life of Pets
The Secret Life of Pets may be an animated film, but it’s not just for kids. Kids and adults alike can enjoy this movie time and time again. Voices of Louis C.K., Kevin Hart, Lake Bell, and Dana Carvey bring these hilarious household pets to life. Have you even wondered what your pets are thinking and feeling? This movie might give you a little insight. Even if you don’t take it seriously (which you probably shouldn’t) it will offer plenty of laughs through your household.
The Secret Life of Pets takes place in an apartment building in Manhattan where a human’s favorite pet sees his life turn upside down before his eyes because a new pet is brought into his home. It’s only a matter of time before he joins forces with Snowball and the Army of Lost Pets to take revenge.
While 2016 has had some busts hit the theater, it has also had some amazing films smash the box office. These movies are guaranteed to entertain you for years to come.
