Nothing Beats a Jack and Coke

I would consider myself a pretty solid at drinking, probably one of the things I am most skilled at, and yes I do consider that a skill, I can keep up with the best of them.  Nothing beats a cold beer, a Red Bull or Monster and vodka, and I realize that this is starting to sound like a country song.  I am embarrassed though that in my almost a decade and a half of legal drinking I have never ordered a Jack Daniels and Coke at the bar.  It is not that I have never tasted it before, I must preface this with telling you that I had a bad experience when I was in high school, where I spent an entire night throwing up, Jack and I did not get along, and ever since even the smell has made me want to throw up.  I have friends that it has always been the drink of choice, but I have never touched it ever since that experience, until now.

It took a music festival with plenty of Jack Daniels on hand to change my mind.  Four of us attended the Louder than Life festival in Louisville, Kentucky, which in itself was an excellent weekend filled with plenty of our favorite bands, some good eats, and tons of fun in and around the city at night.  Coming from the Detroit area, it was exciting to take a road trip and listen to music all weekend.  Of course four guys together raising hell all weekend included plenty of booze and now include many stories that start out with “we had been drinking all day and…” told afterwards.

Figuring that because of the tight scheduling of bands back to back, it made sense to us that we needed to double fist drinks, so that we did not have to miss any of the action.  Since the festival included many poplar and acclaimed whiskey brands, there was plenty of it, and we quickly moved on from beer, and I nervously followed suit and ordered Jack and Cokes along with the rest of my group.  We created a monster, and our new drink of choice.  Not only did I like it, I loved it.  I now order at the bar, my friends who I have not seen recently will say “since when do you drink Jack and Coke?!?”  Whether it is the recent nostalgia of a great weekend, or finally growing up to appreciate something other than beer and vodka, nothing beats a Jack and Coke.
