Best Will Smith Quotes | “Fear Is A Choice”

Today for the first time I saw the trailer for M. Night Shyamalan’s After Earth, coming out next year. I LOVE this type of stuff. Upon my first viewing, I heard something in the trailer that I knew was perfect for our site. In it Will Smith’s character says this:

If we are going to survive this, you need to remember, fear is not real. It is a product of the thoughts you create. Now do not misunderstand me; danger is very real. But fear is a choice.

Check out the trailer and the quote for yourself here:

I don’t know if I’m fully on board with the quote, but it’s worth chewing on. Does “fear” exist outside of our minds? No. But within our minds, it is pretty real. Check out some of our thoughts on Overcoming Fear here.

Due to the trailer, I was inspired to find the best Will Smith quotes out there. I’m not a big follower of Will Smith or anything, but I thought, “Who ever looks for the best Will Smith quotes?” Here’s some more of what I found:

Everybody is ignorant, only on different subjects.

-Will Smith

Money and success don’t change people; they merely amplify what is already there.

best will smith quotes

The fellow that can only see a week ahead is always the popular fellow, for he is looking with the crowd. But the one that can see years ahead, he has a telescope but he can’t make anybody believe that he has it.

Will Smith

Throughout life people will make you mad, disrespect you and treat you bad. Let God deal with the things they do, cause hate in your heart will consume you too.

Will Smith

Too many people spend money they haven’t earned, to buy things they don’t want, to impress people they don’t like.

  1. Gettin’ jiggy with it. I really need to watch the Pursuit of Happiness again…loved that movie. Seven pounds was also really good.

I think I have a man crush on Will Smith.

    • Todd Mayfield says

Seven Pounds–I felt so so sad during that movie. I don’t think I can ever watch it again. Also, my girlfriend and I promised we’d never text again after seeing that movie!

  2. I never really got into Fresh Prince, but I can’t name a movie he’s done that I didn’t like. Independence Day is always going to be the best.

I get what he is saying about fear. As you said, fear is in your mind. If you have the will, you can choose not to be afraid.

  3. I like the one about everybody being ignorant, just on different topics. Peopel give me that look sometimes when I don’t know what they’re saying when they’re talking about politics or weird money things … and I get bugged because, man, I bet I could talk all about carpentry or the proper way to weld a feeder bowl and they’d be dumb on that topic. It all depends, and what’s important to you isn’t always important to me! So no, I don’t know about what the House Speaker said yesterday, but don’t give me grief, because you don’t know about the proper order of home exterior materials! We’re all ignorant in different places and we’re all frickin smart in different places. Right on, Big Willie Style, right on.

    • Todd Mayfield says

It’s true, in some areas I can be the master and be very confident, but in other areas I can draw a total blank. We should try our best to be unflappable in either situation. I read in the Bible once that a fool conceals he’s a fool by not opening his mouth.

  4. That looks like a pretty interesting movie and a thought provoking quote as well. In terms of the favorites I would have to pick the last one hands down. That, taken out in terms of practice is a powerful cocktail that leads to debt.

  5. Todd,

I don’t think the After Earth preview is working. It says the video has removed by the user.

Even though Shyamalan hasn’t made a scary movie since The Sixth Sense, I may be tempted to watch this one, if only to see Will Smith.

I liked best the quote about the person who is able to see years ahead. It makes a strong point for having long-term goals.

On another topic, I started reading your e-book “Fearless Men Throw Down” last night and I think it’s great. Just like the blog you and John do, it’s both motivational and inspirational.

  6. I love the last one about buying to impress those you don’t like. How true that is for lots of people. I love Will Smith!

    • Todd Mayfield says

I know! I do wonder what inspired a guy who’s not lacking money to recognize that about others he’s around.

  7. Fear is an emotion … as is any emotion … be it happiness sadness or anger. We all have these emotions; It makes us human. To suppress them or to control them is to be robotic – it means to embrace apathy. To feel nothing. The reality of our feelings is not based on positive or negative definitions, because it is only how you choose to behave with these emotions that define you.

  8. Will Smith is a VERY WISE Man! The quote about Fear is so VERY true and once people realize this, the world will be on the right path and things will just lead us to more and more happiness, joy, and LOVE!

Much Love & Light to you ALL!!!

  9. Will Smith Fear! says

Will Smith changed the world with the Fear thing. I believe its right!

Fear Is a Poison it hasn’t done the body real harm but it effects in even worse then feelings. A thought that you think is hurting you really isn’t and drives people to the wrong position In Fear.

Fear leads up to nothing and rarely ends up with danger.

What makes fear lead up to danger a lot of times is that it controls you to be a coward.
