  1. Those are excellent quotes. I especially liked the Bruce Lee’s. I read a biography of him and he led a truly unique life

Here is my addition to the list:

Get a few good laughs and do the best you can. Live your life so that even when you lose you win.

    — Will Rogers

“Live your life so that even when you lose your win.” Love it! I’ll include it soon.

I haven’t read a Bruce Lee bio, but I’ve watched a couple on him, and also read the book he didn’t finish, “Tao of Jeet Kune Do.” I actually took Jeet Kune Do last year at a martial arts school. It’s interesting to see how much his successor has continued to grow the form.

  2. Heard a great quote from Theodore Roosevelt this weekend! Made me all ferocious inside… http://wp.me/p10e6N-eE

  3. Excellent quotes and inspiring. I like the George Santayana one especially because my kids are about to head off into the real world. I learned far more outside of school than I did from the teachers in classrooms.

I won’t comment on primary school, but as time goes on I believe less and less in universities. Now, I will say that their are certain careers I think it’s perfectly appropriate: medicine, law, science, etc. But other career paths I’m not as confident they are as well served by traditional schooling.

Having said that, in college I actually did enjoy “gen ed” classes. You know, history and stuff. I think that although biology may not help a manager at a shoe store forward their career, I think the plus side of universities is that you do get a broader education as well, moreso than an apprenticeship.

  4. That Plato and Santayana know their stuff. I definitely want my girls to get a full educationin school, but I also work to educate them at home in other ways. Money, social and family stuff, working with their hands like I do… school education is great and opens doors, but I think they’ll be able to walk through those doors if they’re educated in other ways too!

I agree. I think there is not just mental intelligence, but physical and emotional intelligence as well. A friend once told me that a scholar said Michael Jordan should be labeled an actual “genius,” just like Albert Einstein. His mental ability to figure out what he needed to do physically is of genius proportions.

There’s a great book out there called “Adversity Quotient.” Just as we have an I.Q., we also have varying capacities for adversity. Very interesting, and for those seeking leadership growth it is a great read.

  5. Wow, great post with inspiring quotes. I especially enjoyed the quotes from Plato and Socrates given their teacher and student relationship.

Also, George Santayana was correct. Education via school is important but definitely not the only way to obtain knowledge.

    to add to the list:

“One man with courage makes a majority.”
